Per eliminare padding e margin di default si potrebbe usare semplicemente la regola

* {margin: 0; padding: 0}

ma è troppo pesante applicare lo stile a tutti gli elementi di default che sono impostati nei browser, inoltre toglie dei default che sono utili come ad esempio quelli dei bottoni nelle form. Meglio quindi dichiarare esplicitamente quali sono gli elementi a cui applicare le regole:
